Why Meditate: Benefits of Meditation
Before we dive deep into the benefits of Meditation, let us get into more details about what is Meditation?
In this super busy world we all are highly active both physically and mentally. Our lives are full of different activities and we take pride in calling ourselves highly busy. Today’s world is full of competition and it is survival of the fittest. Humans are running a rat race from morning to night just to get ahead. These results in stress, anxiety, fatigue, tension and eventually we burn out. People use several stimulants like caffeine just to feel energized. Over and above that, the use of smart devices, social media, TV, Movies, YouTube is increasing every day, so our brain never gets rest. Most of the humans do not get enough sleep or the quality of their sleep is very poor so that wake up tired. Their day starts with caffeine. Tired brains and tired bodies impact the quality of life by reducing productivity, decreasing health and has a negative effect on relationships.
So, what is the solution? There are several answers to this question like technology detox, improving the quality of sleep, eating a balanced diet, managing priorities, learning proper time management skills, self-love, taking some time out to wind down at night, giving some time to self to recharge but Meditation is the most effective way. Hence it is highly important and it tops the list.
What is Mediation and what is it not?
Meditation is a method to quiet the mind. It is a way to recharge or to slow down so that we can speed up. Mediation is the journey from the noise to silence. It allows us to quiet the noise of our mind so that we can become more aware and present. Some people assume that mediation is tied to a religion or culture. That is not true. Meditation has nothing to do with any religion or culture. Meditation is for everyone and has no boundaries.
It is a process that helps us to go within so that we can gain knowledge on who we really are, what is our purpose and opens the door to infinite possibilities.
Here are the benefits of Meditation:
Meditation is a great tool to improve the quality of our life.
Meditation improves health both physical and emotional. When we are stressed, we snap at people and react to any situation which makes us feel uncomfortable. Meditation teaches us to respond to any situation instead of reacting to it. Thus, Meditation improves relationships.
Meditation improves physical health as it lowers inflammation, lowers blood pressure, strengthens our immune system, reduces autoimmune diseases.
Meditation turns off genes that are responsible for diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer’s, some types of Cancer and Auto-Immune diseases.
Meditation turns on the genes responsible for good health.
Meditation slows down the aging process by increasing levels of the enzyme telomerase.
Meditation increases the production of hormones like serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins, and dopamine. Thus, it helps increase feelings of joy, happiness, peace, love, compassion, relaxation and gratitude.
Meditation decreases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Thus, meditation reduces stress, fatigue and burn out.
Meditation activates our parasympathetic nervous system and helps in improving digesting, heart health and GI health.
Meditation increases the production of anti-aging hormone DHEA.
Meditation increases mental sharpness, focus, and memory. Thus, it improves our ability to learn new things. Meditation is a great way for students to improve their grades.
Last but not the least Meditation improves our creativity and opens doors to unlimited possibilities. Meditation helps quiet our minds. Just observe the waves when we are at the beach. We will observe that the waves are crashing on the shore, water is very turbulent with lots of activity going on the surface. We will never find pearls on the surface of the ocean due to the hyperactivity and turbulence but when we dive deep into the ocean water is still. Almost zero turbulence. That’s where we find the precious pearls. The same is true for our minds. Pearls of wisdom are found when our mind is quiet.
When we throw a stone into turbulent water, nothing happens but if we throw a stone into quiet water, it creates ripples. Same way when an idea comes to a busy mind where there is a lot of noise, nothing happens because before we implement it, our mind starts thinking about something else but when an idea comes to a quiet mind, we can implement it and open doors to unlimited possibilities. Thus, Meditation helps us reach our fullest potential.
