Swedna
Swedna is a Sanskrit word that is derived from Sweda which means sweat or perspiration and Swedna means a method to induce sweating and perspiration. As we saw earlier, sweat is the enemy of fat and our body also removes toxins by perspiration. Swedna is an ayurvedic therapy where toxins are removed through perspiration using herbal steam and it is a very important part of panchakarma practice. Our sweat glands help us remove toxins through sweat. There are thousands of sweat glands located on our skin and when stimulated they can help in mobilizing the toxins in the inner layers of the skin and muscles so that we can get rid of them. Even though Swedna is performed under the supervision of the ayurvedic practitioner, one can reap the benefits of Swedna at home by using a steam sauna or dry sauna. There are several inexpensive options available in the market. Just do proper research and due diligence before purchasing it. I personally prefer a steam sauna over a dry or infrared sauna because my skin is dry and it gets irritated due to dry heat from the sauna. Mindfulness is the key here so listen to your body’s needs. Also, keep the duration under 45 minutes.
