Mindfulness vs mindlessness 

Before we dive into our topic, let’s understand what is mindfulness? Also, What is the difference between mindfulness and mindlessness?

Mindlessness means not putting much thought into the action. It also means performing the action without worrying much about the outcome of the action. For example, when you are a new driver, you will be very careful about how you drive. You will use GPS, Stop at the stop sign, avoid all distractions. You won’t talk on your cellphone or do anything else while driving but once you get used to driving you are on autopilot. You can now drink coffee and drive at the same time or you can talk with someone or listen to music while driving. You are now more relaxed and chances are sometimes you get so much lost in thoughts while driving that you might miss a stop or yield sign. You don’t have an intention to drive past the stop sign but it just happens because you were not mindful. This is just one example of mindlessness but I am sure you get the point.

Now mindfulness means being consciously aware of your actions. It also means being deliberate about your actions. Not only you are aware of the choices you make but you are also well aware of the consequences of the choices you make and you think through before you make the choice so that you make the right choices. Normally people are mindful about some major decisions in their life like planning a vacation or a wedding but they are not mindful about their day-to-day actions and thoughts. On a daily basis, people are creatures of habit living mindlessly or living on autopilot. They are not mindful about their negative thought patterns or food they eat or how much time they waste on social media or how much money they waste on unnecessary stuff. These minor bad habits come back to haunt you as they determine your health and the quality of your life. When we’re being mindful, we are simply being mentally alert. Mindfulness is about knowing when we are thinking and recognizing the quality of our thoughts without being judgmental or anxious. Practicing mindfulness helps you to focus on the present moment, accept it without being judgmental, and what you can do in the present so that you can improve the quality of your future.
