Sciessentials : Essential Oil Review

Several research studies are being conducted to enhance the quality of sleep, boost mood, reduce anxiety, reduce stress with the help of Essential oils. With the rising popularity of essential oils, aromatherapy, and integrative holistic medicine, the National Institute of Health has conducted several research studies on the possibilities of essential oils to heal skin disorders and other severe health conditions.

According to Ayurveda, Dis-ease occurs in the mind or body when your dosha or unique mind-body constitution is out of balance. Ayurveda recommends holistic healing approaches using our 5 senses i.e Smell, Sight, Sound, Touch, and Taste where Smell, Sound, and Sight are used to balance the out-of-balance dosha in mind while Touch and Taste are used to balance the out of balance dosha in the body.

Thus Aromatherapy or the use of essential oils is very much in harmony with what Ayurveda has taught us. Essential oils (EOs) are aromatic, volatile, and concentrated hydrophobic liquids extracted from plant material. EOs are also called ethereal oils, volatile oils, or aetherolea. EOs also play a crucial role in plant defense and signaling processes. They have proven medicinal benefits. For example, I have experienced that clove oil is highly beneficial in toothaches and gum-related diseases while camphor oil and eucalyptus oil is highly beneficial in common cold, sinus, and nasal congestion. That’s why Camphor and Eucalyptus are active ingredients in Vicks Vaporub.

Floral, fruity, sweet, and sour aromas, such as basil, orange, geranium, clove, lavender, vanilla, and patchouli will immediately calm someone who is feeling anxious, worried, or stressed while cooling, soothing, and sweet flowery aromas, such as sandalwood, jasmine, rose and lavender can help calm out of balance Pitta Mind to reduce their agitation and anger. Feeling sluggish, choose stimulating, spicy, and aromatic scents, such as eucalyptus, camphor, clove, juniper, marjoram, and rosemary.

Though I am not an expert on Essential oils, one thing I can tell is that it is better to use pure essential oils instead of chemical perfumes and fragrances which imitate essential oils. These gifts of mother nature are free of toxins and harmful chemicals, they do not remain in the body and leave no toxins behind. Most people think that this ancient healing treasure is only for soaps, fragrances, shampoos, and lotion but the truth is they are very potent. For example, the essential oil of oregano is 26 times more powerful as an antiseptic compared to phenol which is a toxic chemical compound in most cleaning products. Thus essential oils make much more sense as air fresheners, fragrances, perfumes compared to chemical products which degrade the quality of air due to its toxicity.
